There are ninety species of mammals in Chile, twenty-one of which are threatened. There are 157 species of birds that breed in Chile, twenty-two of which are threatened. Endangered wildlife is managed under the National Policy of Endangered Species. Most management efforts are directed at commercial and scientific undertakings, as well as sport hunting and the capture of live animals for sale. There is very little enforcement of wildlife conservation in Chile. Wildlife management is considered important for food sources in rural communities. Some issues facing wildlife management in Chile are limited expertise, lack of public involvement, limited funding, and habitat loss due to deforestation and mining.
