There are forty-three species of sport fish including Chinook salmon, Rainbow trout, Lake trout, Kokonee, Brown trout, Brook trout. Argentina is becoming a very popular fly fishing destination. In commercial fishing, the most important species is the Atlantic hake. Shrimp and prawns are also an important commercial species.
The Federal Fisheries Act of 1988 mandated the adoption of a quota management system. The objective was to avoid the risk of falling into ‘the tragedy of commons’ and its consequences. Ten thousand workers could lose their jobs if catch-level reductions are enforced to prevent stock collapse.
