Bolivia: Endangered Species

Bolivia recognizes the endangered birds, higher plants, mammals, and reptiles and amphibians. In Bolivia there are 1,350 species of birds, twenty-eight of which are endangered. Also, Bolivia has 17,367 higher plants and seventy of them are endangered. Of 316 mammals, twenty-four are endangered. And Bolivia has 400 reptiles and amphibians, three of which are endangered.

An international list of endangered mammals is put out by the IUCN. The following are from the 2004 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals for Bolivia:

  • Short-tailed Chinchilla (Chinchilla brevicaudata)

Endangered

  • Andean Cat (Oreailurus jacobita)
  • Chacoan Peccary (Catagonus wagneri)
  • Giant Armadillo (Priodontes maximus)
  • Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis)
  • Pacarana (Dinomys branickii)
  • Pygmy Short-tailed Opossum (Monodelphis kunsi)

Vulnerable

  • Andean Hairy Armadillo (Chaetophractus nationi)
  • Bolivian Chinchilla Rat (Abrocoma boliviensis)
  • Endemic to BoliviaBoto (Amazon River Dolphin) (Inia geoffrensis)  
  • Bush Dog (Speothos venaticus)
  • Bushy-tailed Opossum (Glironia venusta)
  • Carriker’s Round-eared Bat (Tonatia carrikeri)
  • Cochabamba Grass Mouse (Akodon siberiae) Endemic to Bolivia
  • Dorothy's Slender Mouse Opossum (Marmosops dorothea) Endemic to Bolivia
  • Giant Anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) 
  • Goeldi’s Marmoset (Callimico goeldii)
  • Greater Pichi Ciego or Burmeister's Fairy Armadillo (Chlamyphorus retusus)
  • Marsh Deer (Blastocerus dichotomus)
  • Osgood’s Short-tailed Opossum (Monodelphis osgoodi)
  • Quechuan Hocicudo (Burrowing Mouse) (Oxymycterus hucucha). Endemic to Bolivia
