Report prepared by Allison Hebert and Gabrielle Osswald, students in BCIT's Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program.

Birds that summer in BC and spend their winters in Peru:

  • Green Heron
  • Redstart
  • Rose-breasted Grosbeak
  • Western Sandpipers
  • Broad-winged Hawks

Overfishing of small schooling fish is a key environmental issue. These stocks are being depleted primarily to make the fish meal that feed farmed fish; that includes farmed fish here in BC and the rest of Canada. In fact, one of Canada's main imports from Peru is animal feed.

Poaching, and the illegal harvest of wild species are fueled by the global demand for exotic products. This includes parrots and other wildlife, as well as plants such as orchids.
