The Amazon Basin: Parks and Protected Areas

Submitted by The Catt-Trax2 Team on Fri, 2007/01/05 - 2:02pm.

Report prepared by Justine Kowalski and Ben McGibbon, students in BCIT's Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program.

Some of the Amazon Basin's parks and protected areas include:

  • Antisana Ecological Reserve
  • Cayambe-Coca Ecological Reserve
  • Llangantes National Park
  • Sangay National Park
  • Sumaco-Galeras National Park

Many of the reserves encompass ecological zones important to both fish and wildlife species. Special features such as the Snow-capped Antisana Volcano can be found in some of the natural parks. Unlike Canada, where all park resources are meant to be left untouched for future generations, many of the natural parks in the Amazon Basin are used by the public for sport fishing and other activities.
