Air pollution caused by rapid urbanization is a major environmental issue. Oil spills have frequently occurred in Brazil, causing severe environmental damage. Brazil has a heavy dependence on hydroelectricity. In 2001, Brazil was the third largest energy consumer in the Western Hemisphere and the largest in Central and South America. Another environmental issue which is gradually improving is the rate of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest.
